Tony Mains was a pre war Officer of Gurkhas, who was somewhat by accident passed out top from an Intelligence Course in 1939. After a short spell as an Instructor at the new Indian Intelligence School, he was sent to Iraq in 1941 as an Intelligence Staff Officer, where he was put in charge of the Security section. He subsequently served in this capacity on the Burma retreat, in Assam and XIV Army, to end up as Chief Intelligence Officer of Central Command India in 1946. This book tells of his progress through these appointments - a pioneer, self taught and making the rules as he went along. The Burma part of the story has already been told in his Retreat form Burma published in 1973; this book deals with is experience before and after the Burma Retreat.
