Showing the collection of English silver at the Victoria & Albert Museum, this volume replaces the 'Catalogue of English Silversmiths' Work', compiled by the late W.W. Watts in 1920. 'Making a less formal approach to the subject than did it predecessor, the present work contains a brief introduction to the the stylistic features of each period, with special reference to pieces of historical as well as artistic interest. The many illustrations have been selected to show the development of English plate from the 14th to the 19th century, and use has also been made of original drawings and painting in the museum. Every important piece acquired before the end of 1961 is included and detailed photographs are given of items of exceptional interest.'
